Nerd among nerds: Spelling bee live tweet

5/30/2014

I love the national spelling bee. The glory, the heartbreak, the painfully awkward middle schoolers, the beyond-intense parents and coaches (yes, of course there are spelling coaches--don't you know my people by now?), the nerd camaraderie, all of it.

So while this might not seem like something that would ordinarily happen, like, in the world, somehow I was inspired to live tweet it. In haiku. I realize this is even more dorky than the spelling bee itself, but let's just go with it, shall we?

It's not that easy pronouncing chrysochloros while wearing braces. #spellingbee

The bee's changed so much. Kids that used to to fingerspell now air keyboard words. #spellingbee

Yes! Charcuterie! I always have a fair shot at words on menus. #spellingbee

I can hardly bear seeing a dream fade away from a parent's face. #spellingbee

Spellers at the bee not too big into team sports. Such awkward high fives. #spellingbee

Spelling bee humor! The Dr. says guttatim I say guttatim. #lol #spellingbee

It must be crushing in spelling bee dynasties: The weight of the words. #spellingbee

Too many kids left. Let's break out the German words. Muaahahahahaaa! #spellingbee

They're starting to sweat. Do trainers come out with towels in between each round? #spellingbee

— Peyton Price (@Suburbanhaiku) May 30, 2014

They're messing with us. A nut-stone that eagles steal? That is not a word. #spellingbee

— Peyton Price (@Suburbanhaiku) May 30, 2014

Where are all the girls? Too busy for spelling bees. They're all doing STEM. #spellingbee

Hello, friends. I'm taking a little break from the microphone and cooking up something new for you.

While I figure it out, you can enjoy an entire year's worth of haiku, served up in the Archives on this very page. Don't you love summer re-runs?

Wait, what? You hate re-runs? Yearning for new haiku? Come find me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, NickMom, and the Huffington Post. Oh, and in bookstores. Don't be a stranger, now!

In case you forgot

Bonus: The truly wonderful Elizabeth Bastos, whose poetic tweets and suburban nature column I idolize, has giggled at my book. I could never do her review justice in a quip, so just go have a looksee.

And since it's Throwback Thursday or whatever and I'm kind of excited about the bluebirds, here they are last year, the very day they fledged.

How to have someone over without cleaning up

Today we have a special guest haiku artist! Enjoy this poem by Kelly Fox of Foxy Wine Pocket. Kelly is a double threat: not only a member of the suburban blog sisterhood, but also a haiku mama. I keep a close eye on her and think you should, too.
You didn't think you were going to get away without my asking did you? Subscribe?
